Dear Future President:

My name is Ryan Schwartzman, and I am from West Milford New Jersey. And this year I have become a freshman at West Milford High School. And today I am writing to you about a certain issue in the United States today, and that issue is Illegal immigration. Now I am fine with immigrants if they came to the United States legally, but the fact that immigrants are getting into the United States illegally is not right. And also in this letter I will be sharing some information on what I think about illegal immigration, and what it could do to the United States.

In this paragraph I will be talking about some of the background information on illegal immigration. For example while I was reading an article on pewresearch.org, it said how the DHS has estimated that 11.4 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the United States in January 2012. And yes I know that 2012 was almost 4 years ago, but it is still a large number, and the odds are that, that number didn’t change much. Another thing that I found was that 52% of all illegal immigrants in the year 2014 were from Mexico. And this is probably because we need to up the security on the border of Mexico to the United States.And another thing that I found out was that in the year 2014, the states of California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois accounted for 59% of illegal immigrants. So a good idea would be to have police check more people in those states for illegal immigrants because they have a higher population of illegal immigrants.

Now let’s talk about some of the probable causes of illegal immigration in the United States. While I was reading an article on the website huffingtonpost.com, I found that since the NAFTA killed low skilled jobs in Mexico, but created them in the United States, people of Mexico crossed the border illegally to get the jobs back that they once had. Another cause of illegal immigration (even though this happened a while ago) is that in the 1970’s in Mexico there was a high birth rate of about 7 children per mother. And even though this number has most likely gone down, It still caused a lot of illegal immigration at that time, due to the over population in Mexico. And some ways that we can stop this illegal immigration, is by upping the security on the land borders of the United States. And by doing this the illegal immigrants will have less of a chance to be able to enter the United States illegally.

Illegal immigration has a lot of effects on United States citizens, and one of those effects are that people are losing jobs to illegal immigrants. And the reason why illegal immigrants are getting these jobs is because they probably don’t know what the minimum wage is. And since they don’t know what the minimum wage is the people who hire the illegal immigrants most likely pay them less than they would for a United States citizen. A good way to stop this all from happening is that the owners of the business (or the managers) could do better background checks on the people who are applying for the job, and make sure that the person they hire, isn't a illegal immigrant.

There are also many different perspectives to the issue of illegal immigration. One of those perspectives are the illegal immigrants themselves. They aren’t going to anything so that the population of illegal immigrants decreases, and this is because they're one themselves. And another perspective to this issue on illegal immigration is the United States citizens. Most people generally do not like illegal immigration in the United States, and their are any reasons for them to think that way. One of those reasons (as I stated before) is that they are taking the jobs from real United States citizens. And I don't think that is something to be happy about.

There are many different things that could be done to stop illegal immigration. One of those things is upping the security on all of the United States borders. This is because the border control we have already is good, but it could be a lot better. And another thing that could be done to prevent illegal immigration is to make the process of becoming a United States citizen easier. This is so that people won't’ have to cross the border illegally, they could just become a United States citizen easily and not worry about being deported.

In conclusion I think the future President of the United States should really try to end illegal immigration all together. And I know that is a big thing to do, but it could end up helping the country as a whole with a lot of problems. And also I have a question that I still need answered, and that question is, How do you plan on ending illegal immigration?
