Bi Hate

What are the misconceptions made about bisexuals and how do people feel about them? Is there anything we can do about this?

Dear Future President

I would like to talk about the hate bisexual people face, however first I’ll explain what bisexuality is. “Bis" are a part of the LGBTQ community, unlike homosexuals, gays, who are attracted to the same sex, bis are attracted to both men and women. It is because of this that bisexuals often face hate from both society and the LGBTQ communities. People often call bis “fake gays” because they will date both men and women, or gays who had a change of heart. This is not the case. They’re just people who happen to appreciate both sides of the gender coin.

This hate against bisexuals may seem to only affect a small group, but in truth it has an impact on the LGBTQ community as well. When people fight among themselves, people who are supposed to be united to make a difference, it causes discord. Bis are a part of the community, yet they’re often overlooked in favor of transgenders and homosexuals, put on as a side note to the rest. How are we supposed to make a difference if we are divided amongst ourselves?

This isn’t just a problem I’m separated from, looking in and pretending to understand. I am bisexual myself, I know on a personal level the issues that come from this lifestyle. How it hurts when your mother thinks you are the way you are to “fit in”, when you see stories on tumblr and other social media websites, slurs against bis and how “fake” they are. It isn’t right, and it’s just all the worse when it’s being said by your fellow LGBTQ members. I want to be able to live life and love living, not ignore a part of who I am.

The perspectives on this subject of bisexuality, as I have said before, is that bis are simply, faking, peer pressure to fit in, or just having been gay but then changing your mind. Others are more accepting and understand. The church is split on the decision of acceptance or not, and as a whole bis are often overlooked.

In conclusion, well, all I’m really trying to do is bring attention to the fact that there are more than just gays and trans who need equality. People who are bi face hate too, sometimes more than others in the community. There’s not much that can be done to change that fact, laws cannot change the way one person feels and thinks about another. Honestly, I don’t know what could be done to fix this issue, aside from educating more people about the truths of bisexuals and others in the LGBTQ community, rather than living in the misconceptions life has provided.
