Obesity in the US

Obesity in the U.S.

Dear Mr/Mrs President,

The topic I have chosen to bring to your attention is obesity in the US. This topic is important because according to the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination survey it affects almost 38% of US citizens. Families are not getting properly educated on its dangers and this is causing obesity to spread from generation to generation. Take it from me, a current student at Clarkston High School were these statistics are clearly visible.

Obesity affects many things in humans, one major factor being mental health. It can trigger physiological disorders such as depression, eating disorders, distorted body image, and low self esteem. These traits are obvious in the school environment and are often exploited by bullying which can cause these traits to worsen by diminishing your image. Professor Marianne Sullivan and her team did a study to prove that obesity leads to these vary symptoms, they did this by putting it to the test in the form of a survey. After the results came back they concluded that, “Depression on a level indicating psychiatric morbidity was more often seen in the obese.”

Obesity also leads to very serious physical harm and deadly diseases such as cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure. In the US about 37 percent of the adult population is considered to be obese. It is even projected that in 2020 obesity will be the single biggest killer on the planet! I think the reason that we are not solving this problem faster is that we are all so attached to our unhealthy lifestyles. Examples being fast food and watching netflix for 5 hour a day. You may even make the same mistakes! This poses the very important question being, how you, the president, can fix this issue?

You can start by spreading awareness of its seriousness and promoting healthier nutrition guidelines. influencing schools could be a very impactful move to more directly impact the younger generation. This will help make the US more healthy and also help things like the environment, average life span and military. for example you can walk somewhere instead of drive. The US will become more susceptible to disease which will increase the average life span, and our military will have healthier more physically fit soldiers.

In conclusion obesity is a big and serious topic that should end so that an astonishing 38 percent US citizens don't have to worry about health issues, or even premature death. If you can help to put in end to this hindrance then within your term you would have saved the lives of countless individuals.
