Guns

Guns keep our streets safe and should not be restricted

   Dear President,

People of the United States see steps being taken that could lead to their guns eventually being taken away. Guns are not only used for recreational purposes but they are also used for self defense. In the United States we have a Constitution and within it is the Second amendment, which says we have the right to keep and bear arms. The people who founded this country decided that letting the people have guns is a good idea, yet some want them taken away or severely restricted. The topic is important to me because I realize that guns are used everyday as self defense and have saved more innocent lives than they have killed.

In the U.S the government is slowly taking away people's right to bear arms. In some states they are banning the sale of guns that have 10 rounds or more. They are taking away little by little which eventually could lead to guns being taken away completely. When Hitler was coming into power, they realized that the people had guns, and once those people found out what Hitler was planning to do, they would have probably gathered their guns stopped Hitler. But the dictator knew this, so he started taking away their guns. First he took away the assault rifles, then he just kept going to the point that none of the civilians owned guns. The situation that happened in Germany is starting to happening in the U.S now, and many people don't know it. The Second Amendment protects our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and individual liberties. It is necessary that civilians keep the right to own a gun, otherwise we could also lose our other Constitutional rights.

Many people argue that gang members and terrorists have guns, and they do. Those who are in favor of getting rid of guns, don't realize this, even if we take away guns from the people, those gang members and terrorists will likely get guns through the black market. Then they walk into a place knowing that no one will have a firearm except them. The police who get there 15 plus minutes after everything's over? Dr. Michael Savage, a radio talk show host, says the “government is not around when terrorism happens, you are and you need to be able to protect yourself and family. You need to prepared and you must get a weapon.” Just consider that question next time you walk into a gun free zone.

A study published by Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, discovered that nations that have more guns have less crime. Studies show criminals generally pick a place that has more guns restrictions because they know that no one is likely to stop them. Taking aways guns would be making a criminal's job easier. According to the NRA (National Rifle Association) “Since 1991, when violent crime hit an all-time high, the nation’s violent crime rate and its murder rate have decreased by more than half, as Americans have acquired over 170 million new guns, roughly doubling the number of privately owned guns in the United States.” Guns make a criminal's job harder because now there is more good people on the streets who own firearms and are able to prevent a violent crime.

Guns are also used everyday as self defense in public and in homes. “Hot burglaries,” in which criminals invade homes while home dwellers are present, are much less common in the United States, where many people have guns, than in England, where most people don’t have guns.” It's already proven that countries that have more guns have less crime, due to the fact that criminals are challenged by other good people who carry guns. Many who oppose the use of guns, argue that women are killed everyday by them. Did they know that, as many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse? Anti-gun researchers found, that there are 1.5 million cases a year where guns are used for self defense. The study was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig. These are people who aren't even in favor of guns and their research shows that guns saves lives.

Anyone who owns a gun must know how to properly use it and should take a gun safety course. People who own guns need to be very careful with them at home. They need to be out of reach of minors so that there is not a situation where the child finds a gun and starts playing with it. It should be locked up in a gun safe. And we should teach them how to properly use and respect a weapon in cases of emergency. Owning a gun has a lot of responsibility and should never be used without good education.

Dear President, guns are a vital tool used for self defense everyday, they lower crime rates and keep our streets safer. That's why guns should be allowed in the hands of Americans. Yet our Second Amendment is at risk of being taken away. So please protect the freedom of the right to keep and bear arms.
