Dear Future President,

At least 26 countries have banned genetically modified organisms due to the negative impact they have on personal health, the environment and many other serious issues. The United States needs to stop ignoring these effects and follow in the footsteps of Germany and Scotland to stop the consumption of these evil plants.

First of all, the ingestion of GMOs can cause serious health issues, such as cancer, allergies and antibiotic resistance. All of these matters can be a serious threat to the wellbeing of a person. “The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise.” This increase in chronic illnesses is no coincidence compared to the use of GMOs. As people continue to eat genetically modified foods, more and more evidence appears showing that they create major health concerns. If nothing is done, many people will have life threatening allergies, cancer, nutritional deficiencies and many other problems. This is not a healthy situation for a country to be in.

Secondly, the production of genetically modified organisms generates numerous environmental problems. The herbicides used to kill unwanted plants also kills wanted animals and resources. “GM crops are eliminating habitat for monarch butterflies, whose populations are down 50% in the US. Roundup herbicide has been shown to cause birth defects in amphibians, embryonic deaths and endocrine disruptions, and organ damage in animals even at very low doses.” All of the harmful chemicals used to “better” our food is ruining our ecosystem. Not only do these herbicides damage animals but they also contaminate water resources and become harmful to humans. Pesticides are more harm than good.

Not only are GMOs dangerous to the health and environment, but people are also being misinformed about what they are eating. Genetically modified products are not labeled in the supermarket. Many believe that it is not necessary to label them because GMOs do not do any harm but as I have presented above, they are. The American people deserve to know what their families are consuming everyday. Something as harmful as GMOs cannot be ignored.

So future president, the US government needs to stop denying the fact that genetically modified organisms are threatening to both everyone’s health and the environment and BAN GMOS!!!!!
