Should the military allow women to serve in combat roles?

Men and women are supposed to be given equal rights, should serving in the military be that exception?

To whom it may concern:

The Nineteenth Amendment was ratified August 18, 1920 stating men and women are given equal rights to vote, but is that the only right men and women should have the same equality? Gender equality still remains an issue and is affecting whether or not a woman is capable of defending our country.

Many people question whether or not women should be allowed to serve in combat roles. In the past, women disguised themselves as men to serve, or were nurses, laundresses, or cooks for the men, these being very stereotypical jobs for women. In the past, and even the present, people picture the “perfect scenario” being the man of the house coming home to a woman who is cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Generally, women didn’t partake in having job until the 1970’s; the only reason they would work before this is if a man in the house was in war.

On one hand, women should have the equal right to participate in military combat. Preventing women from these roles is discriminatory. If a women can pass the same physical test as a man, why wouldn’t she be allowed to partake in the same role as him. It’s hard understanding why people would deny a woman this role, especially when she wants to protect her country.

On the other hand many acknowledge the fact that women are not as physically capable because historically women have been viewed as caretakers and not aggressors. Another reason being that men are more likely to risk the success of a mission to protect a women from danger. If a women was in combat that means they passed the same physical test as a man and is capable of preventing and getting herself out of any danger that comes with the job. Finally, another reason being combat roles put women in high risk of sexual assault. This should not be a reason women are being held back from protecting their country. Men should respect the women, especially when they have the same roles in combat. Any job that includes men and women can have a risk of sexual assault.

In conclusion, men and women are said to pertain the same equal rights. Therefore, this being said men and women should be able to have the same job. For example, in the past it was usually women that had the profession as a teacher, now men also partake in this profession. That being said women should have the same privileges as men to do what they aspire.

Sincerely,
