Prescription Drug Abuse leads to Heroin addiction
Prescription drug abuse in teens is a major problem.

Dear Future President,
Not many people recognize the issue that is prescription drug abuse, and far less do anything about it. Every year 2.4 million people abuse prescription drugs, and 16,000 die from that abuse. Prescription drugs are often a gateway drug to Heroin, which is much easier and cheaper to obtain on the streets. People use prescription drugs because they think that they are safer than other drugs, but they are a real threat in America, and we are the leading nation in prescription drug abuse.
Every year more and more people get addicted to drugs, in school I see people using more drugs and I believe that it will become even more of a serious threat if we leave this untamed. Anyone with a doctor can get prescription drugs, and I think it would be best if we put more restrictions on them, such as more common checkups, blood tests, and maybe even therapy to be sure recipients are not becoming addicted or selling their pills. I also propose raising the minimum jail sentence for people who are caught dealing drugs, and reaching out to more teens of the risks of seemingly harmless substances.
Many who abuse prescription drugs end up using Heroin. Heroin is much cheaper, estimated at 10 times less costly than an average painkiller of the same size. These drugs are highly addictive, and cause major destruction to people's lives, whether that be work, school, or family connections.
I believe that prescription drugs can cause harm, but they can heal. they are highly addictive, and many families are being torn apart by this kind of drug abuse. For many other families though, these same medications are a blessing, helping people heal faster and assisting with daily functions. I believe we need to keep prescription drugs, but we must regulate them so they don't get into the wrong hands. We need change, and I’m hoping that you can be the one to help our country heal.
Sincerely yours,
Auggy
