Gender Pay Gap

Women are being paid less than men for the same amount of work.

Dear future President of the United States,

Imagine a world where both, men and women would be paid the same. That would make women a lot happier. Women are no different than men so it’s not fair that they aren’t paid the same. Your policy should prevent women getting paid less than men, help minorities get paid the same, and make sure Women are being paid above the minimum wage.

The government has been trying to crack down on the difference of pay between men and women, but it is still a major problem. “Women overall earn 84% of what men do in median hourly pay, a gap that has narrowed considerably since 1980, when women earned 64% of what men were paid. The narrowing–and persistence–of the gender pay gap are explored in a new Pew Research Center report, which also includes a survey of attitudes about this issue.” (cohn)That’s a lot of money lost. It’s not fair that Women are losing that much money compared to men even though they are doing the same amount of work. “The hourly pay gap between working women and men has narrowed to 16 cents today, compared with 36 cents in 1980. But progress has slowed in recent years and even reversed for many women over the course of their careers.” (Kochhar)That doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but it adds up over time.

The pay gap between men and women is bad, but certain minorities have it even worse. “Women full-time workers earn only 77 percent for each dollar earned annually by men, a 23 percent wage gap. It is even greater for minority women, with African American women earning 64 cents and Hispanic women earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white man.” (u.s)This is bad some minority groups are only getting half the amount of money men do. Your job as president is to make all minority groups paid the same as men.

Now most women are being paid minimum wage even though they are doing the same amount of work as men. Some women are only being paid in tips and this leads to poverty. “Women are nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers and two-thirds of tipped workers.”(By comparison) This has to change women are no different and don’t deserve to be paid minimum wage.

Your job as president is to change this. Women need to be paid the same as men if they are doing the same amount of work. Also minorities should also be the same as men this would reduce poverty because now women will have enough money to buy their essential needs.
