Breathing Oil Smoke

This letter is about how our factories are hurting our environment. We can make various things that will make less burning oil.

Dear President of the United States,

I like to skate and be outside or just go out to walk for fun. I’ve noticed that some factories send out a lot of smoke and I feel like people do not pay attention to the environment. If we can make our environment cleaner and stop using oil and other pollutants, everyone will live better. Global warming is a big problem that you should address because it is heating up our planet and causing a lot of damage to our environment. How would you feel if you wake up each morning and the first thing you breathe in is burning oil?

Our environment needs to be safer. If our air is fully toxic we won't be able to enjoy lots of beautiful things provided by nature that will keep us healthy and happy. Therefore if we constantly breathe in burning oil, it can definitely be harmful. "Noxious gasses released when oil burns cause serious damage to the lungs, and symptoms of oxygen deficiency include weakness, uneasiness, fatigue, depression, dizziness, hostility, and memory loss, and unconsciousness." According to John D. Spengler et al. in "The Interior Air Quality Handbook," "burning crude oil produces sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide. These gasses irritate the respiratory tract and can trigger an asthma attack. Carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness and even death with extended exposure." “Burning coal emits almost twice as much carbon dioxide as natural gas and 28 percent more pollutants than heating oil.” (Bloomberg, adapted by Newsela staff).

One solution that would help with that issue would be if you close more coal-burning plants and install even more expensive equipment to reduce pollution. It would be helpful because coal makes about one quarter more pollution than heating oil. Meanwhile, air pollution caused by factories is one of the leading causes of climate change, "when burned, these fossil fuels emit harmful gasses including carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide which increase the number of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere resulting in global warming." And "in highly populated cities that have more factories air pollution is much worse." Basically, when the sunlight passes through the atmosphere to warm the earth this heat radiated back toward space, most of the heat is absorbed by the warming of Earth's surface and the air above it and discharge in all directions, warming the surface of the earth and the lower atmosphere (NASA, 2015). This will also affect the oceans and melt glaciers and other ice which will increase the sea level. "Ocean water also will expand if it warms, contributing further to sea level rise. Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities."

It is clear that those factories are just ignoring the fact that their factories causing our world destruction. Although we need those factories, we can make various things that will make less burning oil, because burning oil foil release gases. These gases will be inhaled and reach our lungs. We need our health to get things done, by helping with this issues it would make everyone's life better.

Sincerely,

Sesly Pierre
