Gun Control

Dear Next President,

As you know gun control has become a major issue in the U.S, especially in recent years. Some people believe it would be best to get rid of guns in this country altogether, while others argue that this is a constitutional amendment and cannot be violated or compromised.

I believe that taking guns away from law abiding citizens would only make things worse and wouldn’t solve the problem. The reason for this is because the U.S has the highest gun ownership per person with 88.8 per 100 Citizen and also has one of the lowest (103rd ranked) homicide rates with 4.8 per 100,000 Citizens. The statistics show that having guns around enable people to protect themselves and others from these people that commit the crimes.

I also believe taking guns wouldn’t work because the people that commit crimes are not following the law to begin with so to think that they will begin to follow the law doesn’t make sense. For example, Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country yet still has the highest gun crime as well, so taking away or restricting them has proven to not work. Another reason I don’t agree with this is because it is violating one of the fundamental rights provided to Americans in the U.S.: the Constitution.

The opposing viewpoint would be that guns are what is wrong in this country because they have accounted for so much violence in recent years. In an article by The Washington Post states ”Mass killings in the United States are most often carried out with guns, usually handguns, most of them obtained legally.” This means that the majority of mass killings are carried out by guns.

My call to action would be for the president to promote guns and not do away with them for the reasons that I have previously stated along with the fact that it would eliminate jobs and put the already shrunken workforce at an even smaller number. This connects to the global goal Life on Land because this is about making sure people are safe where they are living and traveling. This is a priority for the next president because it is a major thing dividing the country today.
