Letter to the next POTUS

This is my letter regarding my thoughts on Affordable Care Act.

Dear President,

I am writing to you because I am thoroughly concerned about the cost of health care. Obamacare is currently causing more harm than good. Our health care system is inevitably going to collapse under the financial strain. Middle class families, such as my own, are suffering the most. My mother and father worked together at our family-owned chiropractic office and due to health insurance premium increases, my mom has been forced to leave our family-owned business and find an employer that offers health insurance.

Since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010 by President Obama, my parent’s health care premiums have already gone up 279%. My dad just received a letter from his insurance company stating that it was set to go up another 42% on January 1, 2017, which will leave his premiums almost four times more expensive than they were 3-4 years ago. The average middle class family cannot afford to pay that much for health insurance. Along with the incredible increase in premiums, copays and deductibles have gone up at an alarming rate, which means even if you are able to afford your premiums, if you end up sick, you may have to pay another $6,000 to $8,000 before your insurance pays any portion.

In the case study, Belgium v. United States, a man speaks of his health insurance experiences. He solely writes about how he had injured himself while overseas and was going to come home to get surgery, but with his health insurance, it cost less for him to get surgery in a foreign country. The year after he had his surgery overseas, he received a letter stating that his health care would no longer be available through healthcare.gov and he had to pick a new plan that was even more expensive with a higher copay and higher deductibles. Like us, he is forced to pay higher amounts for a health care plan in which he had to pay $6,850 out of pocket. If health care companies are making millions within the last few years, why can’t they lower our insurance plans?

In conclusion, our nation needs a more affordable health care system. Families all over the United States are suffering from the increase of copays and deductibles. Not only are middle class families suffering, but families that are receiving extra help from Obamacare are struggling as well. Our nation is going to collapse under the financial strain because we are only losing money. This is a situation that I can relate to my personal life and I know that it is a well-known issue all across the United States. Please strongly consider relieving some of the financial strain to better our society.

Sincerely,

Alexa P.
