Gun Control

Guns have been the cause of many deaths in the United States. Yet people argue against this due to the second amendment. Something needs to change before anymore innocent lives are lost.

Dear President,

Gun control has been a hot topic the last few years now. Some say we need it to reduce mass shootings while others say it would be violating our right to bear arms. The stubborn argument for the old, misinterpreted right is not worth more than the lives of thousands of innocent people. We need to do something now before our nation spirals out of control. I wish for you to please do something to protect the citizens from these outrageous crimes and create gun control laws.

In 2015 alone there was 372 mass shootings, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. America’s gun homicide rate is twenty-five times higher than the other developed countries around the world. There are at least 12,000 gun homicides every year in the United States, and it rises every year. These numbers are only rising as time goes on, and putting more and more lives in danger the longer we go without stricter gun control laws. People have become to the shocking headlines regarding a brutal mass shooting, as the occurrence happens so often now. How many more people will have to die before we get change?

Americans defend their guns, saying that it is their right to bears arms. The second amendment states “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” This amendment was written not long after the Revolutionary War, a time when everyone was afraid of immense control from the government after gaining victory from Britain. Given our current time, the government is much more stable and has many laws in place to protect the citizens in our modern era. This amendment is outdated should be adjusted to suit the current day and age.

A way to help restrict guns in America would to make it very hard to obtain guns so easily. People who wish to own a gun must pass a test of some sort, to guarantee that they are fit to own such a weapon. It should also be very hard to obtain any gun that could be used for mass shootings, like assault rifles and any other heavy-duty weapon such as that. We don’t need to get rid of every gun in America, but there should be strict control to prevent more people from dying. Please change our country so our people can feel safe again.

Sincerely, Abigail
