Animal Abuse
Have you ever seen an ad on the TV where animals are really sad looking because they are abused? Well, animals are abused more than anyone thinks. Most cases aren’t even reported, only the ones that are really bad are. A study in 2011 showed that out of 1,423 cases, 70.1% were dogs, 20.9% were cats, and 24.1% were other animals (humane society). A lot of farm animals are treated poorly without anyone knowing and intentional cruelty goes in hand with other crimes (humane society).
Dear Future President,
Have you ever seen an ad on the TV where animals are really sad looking because they are abused? Well, animals are abused more than anyone thinks. Most cases aren’t even reported, only the ones that are really bad are. A study in 2011 showed that out of 1,423 cases, 70.1% were dogs, 20.9% were cats, and 24.1% were other animals (humane society). A lot of farm animals are treated poorly without anyone knowing and intentional cruelty goes in hand with other crimes (humane society).
Farm animals are treated poorly all over the country and no one does anything about it. Mostly on big corporations, animals are put in crates, cages, or pens so small they can barely move. All of these pens are filthy and barren sheds that are run down and about ready to collapse (humane society). On dairy, beef, and swine farms, most of the animals are selectively bred for unnaturally high rates of production, which decreases their well-being. However, there are no federal animal welfare laws regulating the treatment of billions of animal on the farm so nothing is being done about it.
Most intentional cruelty is closely related to violence against people and other crimes. Dog fighting and cockfights can cause drug trafficking, homicides, and killings due to a loss on a bet. In one survey, 71% of domestic violence victims reported their abuser also targeted their pets. On January 1, 2016, the FBI added cruelty to animals as a category in the Uniform Crime Report to provide a clearer picture on animal abuse. PAWS (Pets and Women Safety Act) introduced to congress in 2015 supported by Humane Society Legislative Fund, allows victims of abuse to escape their abusers while keeping companion animals safe as well (humane society).
Clearly, farm animals are treated very poorly and intentional cruelty goes hand in hand with other major crimes. However, these topics could be handled better if everyone was helping out and not just a few foundations that rely on donations and volunteers. So I am asking that whoever the next president is, please address this issue in every way that you can. Help all of these poor animals out. They don’t deserve any of this and if you have a heart that feels bad for these animals please, please, please do something about it.
Sincerely,
Sadie
