Their Body, Their Choice!

I believe that women should have the right to an abortion procedure.

Dear Future President,

Abortion is arguably one of the largest and most debated social issues in our beloved nation. It deals with whether a woman should have the freedom to have a medical procedure in order to have her baby removed from her body or not. The two sides of the dispute, those who are “pro-choice” and believe that a woman should have the freedom to have this procedure and those who are “pro-life” and believe that a woman’s right to abortion should be restricted, are in constant argument over the topic. I believe that we should give our country’s women the right to abortion, and you should feel the same because abortion can save lives, keep women out of serious financial debt, and protect women’s right to choose what they want with their body.

My first and foremost reason to believe that an abortion procedure should be allowed is because it can protect a woman’s life. A pregnancy is not a risk-free chapter in a woman’s life, as the mother could develop conditions such as severe infections, heart failure, or severe cases of preeclampsia, in which a woman experiences very high blood pressure and becomes subject to the risk of having a stroke , all of which could lead to death. When our country was originally founded, our Founding Fathers gave us the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness . Illegalizing abortion is taking away two of those supposedly God-given rights from the mother, her right to her life and her freedom to do what she does with her own body. This means that the government would be contradicting its own statements that it established more than 200 years ago. And you know who that just so happens to frown upon? You, Mr. President. Denying women the right to having an abortion restricts their God-given rights while also making you and the rest of our government system look crooked in the face of the people.

I also think that abortion should continue to be legal because it can keep women out of serious financial debt. Many women who are pregnant or become pregnant are already in a difficult financial situation, and having a child costs the mother, especially one who is single, a massive amount of money. Eventually, the parent won’t be able to provide the care that the child needs, putting both into poverty. However, an abortion allows the mother to avoid that life, both for herself and for a child.

I realize that many believe that abortion is very immoral because it is taking away the life of a child. However, I do not the support the right to abortion because it is morally right, but because it gives some women to live a better life, if any at all, than they would be if they went through with their pregnancy. If we simply illegalized anything that was immoral, war and many parts of the criminal justice system would also be outlawed, but we know that that isn’t happening. Abortion should be legal because it allows women the inherent right to choose to do what they want with their body.

While abortion may be immoral in some ways, I believe that a woman should have the choice to do what they want with their body. Whether it be to save her own life or to prevent a desperate financial situation, women deserve to make their own decision. If it’s their body, it should be their choice too, and I’d like you to join me in supporting that.

Sincerely,

 Holden Henegar
