Marijuana legalization

Marijuana has major health and economic benefits that people ignore because of it being illegal at this point in time.

Dear Future President:

Marijuana is produced from a cannabis plant. It is a wild plant that can grow in most climates but is mainly found in the wild in tropical and temperate climates. The leading chemical in the cannabis plant is delta-9 tetrahydro-cannabinol (thc). Each cannabis plant has different thc strengths some have more and some have less meaning they can affect things in different ways. Researchers say that there are two active chemicals in marijuana, cannabidiol(CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). Both affect you in different ways. CBD impacts your brain without a high, where as THC has pain relieving (and other) properties. Marijuana can be used to help and prevent an eye disease known as glaucoma. Glaucoma causes an increase of pressure in the eyeball which leads to damage of the optic nerve and causes sight loss. A study published in Journal of the American Medical Association in January 2012, marijuana does not impair lung function and can even increase lung capacity. Another study done in 2003 showed that marijuana can also be used to prevent epileptic seizures. These are just a couple of the diseases that marijuana has been proven to help with.

When marijuana was legalized in Washington, and Colorado it was expected that combined it would bring the two states $550 million, with more than 300 economists previously estimating that legalizing pot could save the U.S. up to $14 billion a year. The U.S. would save $13.7 billion because we would not have to fund prohibition enforcement costs. There was $500 million in tax revenue for Washington state. There would be major savings in prison costs because we would not have people in jail over pot. California grows $14 billion worth of marijuana crop a year. Dispensaries would need advertisement boosting newspaper revenue, and these are just a few ways that legalizing marijuana would benefit the U.S.

In conclusion, the legalization of marijuana would bring about great benefits to our economy and future medical advancements. It would help treat, slow down, and prevent many diseases in the future. It is also predicted that legalizing marijuana will bring the U.S. a greater economic opportunity and will reap a large amount of money for our government.
