Gun control

Why gun control is more logical.

Dear Mr./Mrs. President,

If you live in the United States of America you have most likely heard of the problems with guns. Gun control has been an issue that has been passionately argued on both sides of the argument, those supporting gun control and those supporting gun rights. Gun control is the more logical choice because it decreases the amount of gun deaths and it keeps guns from getting into the hands of the wrong people using background checks.

It is as simple as the more guns, the more deaths. A well known news source called “Vox” put together a chart that compares gun deaths and gun ownership in the U.S. “It shows that among highly developed countries, the more guns in a country, the more gun deaths” (Vox). Clearly, letting more guns flow freely through society only increases gun deaths. The reason for these arguments is to find peace and having no restrictions only hinders us from reaching that goal.

Background checks would allow for guns to not get in the hands of criminals and mentally ill citizens. Allowing criminals and mentally ill people to receive guns freely leads to a very dangerous society. Background checks can stop this. Innovative architects shows, “Since beginning the background check program, more than 100 million checks have taken place in the last decade, which resulted in more than 700,000 denials” (Innovative architects). Without gun control, those 700,000 people who were denied could have used their newly purchased firearm for harm. Gun control allows for a more safer society by using background checks to deny access to people who should not have access to guns.

People opposing gun control say that they need guns for self defense. However, guns are rarely used for self defense. The LCAV is a national public interest law center dedicated to preventing gun violence. They explain, “According to those studies, a gun kept in the home is more likely to be involved in an accidental shooting, criminal assault or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill an intruder in self-defense” (Greenhaven press). Guns in your home only lead to dangerous activities and are very rarely used for self defense. Without these guns, it will lead to a safer society.

With these facts, it shows that gun control is the more logical choice because it decreases the amount of gun deaths and it keeps guns from getting into the hands of the wrong people using background checks. The number of guns allowed in society directly correlates with the number of deaths. Also restricting guns to criminals and mentally ill people shows it is safer. Background checks and more intense restrictions on guns are steps we can take to make America safe again.

Sincerely yours,

Ethan
