Letter to the President

Ashlyn Koontz

Dear next president,

I have a few concerns for this country, and there will need to be a lot of fixing to “Make America Great Again,” or to be “Stronger Together.” The main issues I want to see resolved, along with many americans, are the abortion issues, police brutality and immigration issues.

How will you approach the abortion issue? Abortion is a very controversial issue in the United States, so how will you resolve it without upsetting mass amounts of people? Half of all pregnancies are unintended, probably caused by the lack of sex education, how will you work to fix that? 4 in 10 unintended pregnancies are aborted and 21% of all pregnancies end in abortion. Whatever side of abortion you stand on, how are you going to approach leaving both sides pleased, and how will your stand affect this country?

How will you control police brutality? 346 black people were killed by police in 2015. This is simply outrageous. How will you take a stand against this? Any sane person would realize this is not okay, but it’s very complicated to get anywhere if the police officers are never convicted of it. 97% of cases, the police officer wasn’t charged for a crime. This is very much a case of racism, as much as we want to believe it’s not. Black people are 3x as likely to be killed by police than a white person. Only ⅓ of black people killed had been suspected of a violent crime.

How will you handle the immigration issue? Immigration is a huge issue in our country. 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants were in America in 2016. That’s approximately 145 Arrowhead stadiums full of undocumented immigrants. There is no constant to which race is coming over. Mexicans make up 52% of the immigrant population. That leaves 48% to other countries. What countries will you focus on? If you focus on only Mexico that leaves 48% of the flow continuing to come undocumented into our country.

Are you willing to solve these issues? How will you approach them? Being the president is a huge honor with great responsibility. Good luck.
