Free College!

Why college should be free and how it would benefit everyone.

Dear Future President of the United States,

Try to picture a world where no matter how wealthy or how poor, everyone was still fortunate to go to the college of their choice. What if nobody had to even worry about saving for college because it was free? Your policy should give free college to everyone so it doesn’t debt kids after college, low income kids can attend, and overall it would improve the economy.

In most cases these days students are taking out student loans to fund their college. Although they are finally in, once they graduate that is the bigger problem. This year the average debt was about $35,00, this average practically tripled in 3 decades. “For example, student loan debt exceeded credit card debt in 2010 and auto loans in 2011, and it passed the $1 trillion mark in 2012.”(college news) Student debt is increasing every year so imagine what is will look like in the near future. This is happening because the government no longer has fair share of college costs. If this continues to increase will kids even want to attend college if their going to be so high in debt?

As one may know college is very expensive and a lot of families can’t afford it. For example there are so many low income kids that aren’t able to apply for colleges because of the expenses. “Both of us share the goal of trying to make college affordable for all young Americans. I have a compact that would do that for debt-free tuition. We differ, however, on a couple of points. One of them being that if you don't have some agreement within the system from states and from families and from students, it's hard to get to where we need to go.”(ontheissues) There were only 45% of low income kids that applied or made it into college. Now think about all the other students who are very capable of going to a great college, just can’t afford it.”President Barack Obama rolled out a new plan Thursday to make two years of community college free, or nearly so, for millions of students across the country, a major investment that the White House cast as changing the face of higher education” How will they get a job without a college education, and even if they do it's not going to be great pay. All because of money it can basically make a student's life 10 times harder than it should be. It shouldn’t matter if you are rich or poor, it should matter if you are intelligent enough to attend. Take a minute and realize how many kids aren’t adequate for college because of financial reasons. Then take a minute and realize how many more kids would apply and get accepted, if college education was free.

Free college education would benefit the economy because of the talent shortage at many companies currently face.”A college education today is not a luxury; for many careers it is a personal necessity as well as a social good. Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed that the government should guarantee tuition for every student in a public university, which is 75 percent of the student population.”(americanmagazine) All the students that aren’t able to go get their college education could be one more person in that field. Another thing is if you have a great education the more money you will make, which allows you to spend more. Which is helping the economy grow. Those with a college education are less likely to need government assistance. Which would allow us to use those funds in other ways to bolster the economy.

Overall I believe that you should make college education debt free and cost free. This would benefit the country in so many ways. It would relieve so many people and families. This would be give such a great impact on the world today. Congratulations of your presidency!

Sincerely,

Elle C
