The call for Gun Control

This letter focuses on the problem of gun control laws and how this has caused a divided nation.

Dear Future President,

The power of a gun can make your life disappear in less than a second. The power of a gun can create a lifespan of misery. The power of a gun can create a feeling of guilt because we never did something to fix the amount of deaths that have occurred. Gun control has been an issue that has been around for many years, and we need to fix it. This problem of guns in our country has continually came up and it needs to change. We used to be a country that was together as a union, but now it has collapsed into a union that is divided. We have fallen into a country where citizens are afraid to walk on the streets, and where we are not confident anymore about our safety. The reason for this is simple. Guns have been taking over our country's safety immensely.

The United States has the highest percentage of people owning guns in the world. There is currently about 270,000,000 people in the United States alone that owns a gun, and 270 million citizens that own civilian firearms in America. Imagine going to school one day and a man with a gun appears in your classroom. What would you do? The thing is, you can’t do anything. The power of a gun is so powerful that in one second, your life could be over. Close to 33,000 Americans were victims of gun-related deaths in 2011. On an average day, 91 Americans are killed with guns. There are nearly 12,000 gun homicides in the average year in the U.S. Because of guns and it’s capability, women, children, people based on their race and ethnically are being killed or harmed from the shot of a gun. Guns have caused a great deal of violence in America over the past hundreds of years. It has killed thousands and made the citizens of the United States become insecure about their safety. 65% of those who have a gun are those who use it for their safety. That is what the world has become. The world has become a place where guns is the main issue of citizens insecurity. We need to fix this. Do we really want a country where children go to school afraid? Or have a country where children are allowed to play outdoors with no fear in mind?

I personally believe that we should have stricter gun control laws. With stricter gun control laws the death rate will decrease. Women and men will be safe from stalkers and abuse. We should have gun control laws that will allow less people who would use a gun for irresponsible actions to have a gun. Those who are mentally ill for example, should not have the right to use a gun. I have noticed that those who are mentally ill and have a gun have caused a great deal of violence for this community. Because of this I feel that we should have more background checks on all those who want to purchase a gun or who have a gun. This will ensure a safer community as we will know more information about those who want or have a gun. Background checks have blocked 3 million gun sales to prohibited people. I believe that the majority of those back ground checks have saved thousands of lives.

Gun control has been a constant debate for our country for many years. Although some may think gun control laws won’t do anything, I know it will make a difference in changing the world. Mr/Mrs President, you have the power to make our country one again. With your help and devotion we can change the country for the better and make stricter gun control laws. Less people will be killed from homicides, murders, suicides and more because of your help. We need you to help us, and we need you to make this country safe again.

Sincerely,

Casey C.
