Education Changes

Education needs attention

Dear Future U.S. President,

Congratulations on winning the election! As you begin you term in office, I have an important issue that I would like to discuss. Over the past couple of years, it has become more clear to me that education is suffering serious problems. As a current high school student, I have experienced budget cuts first-hand. I would like to address this issue that could really impact the United States as a whole.

For the first main point, teacher’s salaries are way too low. They get paid $55,000 on average per year. In the state of Oklahoma, teachers make $44,000 on average, which is much lower than the national average. With the small salaries, it is turning away teachers because they believe they can make more money at so many other jobs. Especially in my state, there was a lack of teachers at the beginning of the year. Due to this issue, my class sizes have dramatically increased. At the high school level, it causes some inconveniences to the teachers, but they are mostly able to work around it. In elementary schools, it has become so difficult for teachers to control their classrooms because of the large number of students. The young kids require more one on one learning. With this problem, it is effecting the next generation of students as they are unable to have the proper education that they deserve. Teacher’s salaries and increases in class sizes are just a few of the issues that need to be changed within our education system.

Taking these issues into consideration, another major issue is the lack of funding in the school system. Since the budget-cuts have come into effect, the students are now facing a lack of supplies within their school. At my school, teachers are only allowed to make so many copies of papers. For example, in English class, I believe that it is very important to have your own copy of articles, so students can annotate them. With this issue, I feel like students are missing out on important resources that can positively impact their education. Other teachers, require students to bring their own copies into class. For some students, this does not cause a problem at all, but for others who are struggling financially, they do not have the resources. Then, the students are at a disadvantage. The lack of funding is effecting the next generation of kids, which is the United States future.

Looking over all of the issues, it is important that education should addressed. As you begin your term in office, I ask that you please look into the small teacher salaries, large class sizes, and lack of funding. It is imperative that will deal with the education of the next generation. With these reforms, it will cause positive results for the United States.
