Gun Violence in America

An insight to the issue of gun violence in the United States.

Dear Future President,

All throughout the world societies are struggling with many difficult issues. Among these issues includes the very serious and legitimate problem of gun control. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Scott Walker, governor of Wisconsin, is for “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, (and it) shall not be infringed." Walker believes in the Second Amendment heavily, and believes the only problems that come from gun control are from mental illnesses. For example Mr. Walker said, “In many of these cases, someone has fallen through the cracks without getting the appropriate treatment for mental health issues." Mr. Walker is completely fine with the guns available for purchase (semi auto or fully automatic), but wouldn’t mind a better background check. For other people in the state of Wisconsin, however, the amount of gun violence is way out of control. The fact that a total of 33,636 deaths in 2013 in the United States is a real statistic is scary to many. It is far too easy to get a gun in today’s world, and that needs to change.

It’s true that the background checks should be stronger, but the guns that are on the market are just as much of an issue. It is pretty obvious that someone with mental health issues shouldn’t have a gun, but why would anyone need a semi-automatic or automatic gun like a glock or assault rifle? For recreational use? Protection? Every citizen deserves their right to preserve their second amendment, but do they need a gun that is easily capable of mass shootings? The U.S. would lose money by limiting what guns they sell, but many lives would be saved from the terrible shootings that occur on a daily basis.

In the case of District Columbia v. Heller it was decided that it is constitutional to have a loaded gun in the house for self defense purposes. Guns are supposed to be meant for self defense, but often they are sold illegally for a profit. This means that guns can end up into the hands of criminals, which results in a lot of unwarranted deaths due to gun violence. There are far too many people that look at the profits to be made from selling firearms to be more important than the amount of deaths occurring year after year from gun violence. As the future president of this country, do not look past the numbers of deaths and see them just as another statistic. Realize that every one of those deaths was a person with a family and friends. Understand that they had so much of their life to live, but it was ended due to gun violence. Control the problems of gun violence that have soared out of proportion, and make the world a safer place.

Sincerely,

Tyler Glass.
