Sexual Assault and Rape

The many problem with sexual assault and why it needs to stop.

Dear President,

Sexual assault has been a problem for many years. Younger women are afraid of being sexually assaulted, it is happening everywhere, and there is an aftermath of being sexually assaulted. Something needs to be done about this problem now.

Let's start off with the fact that women are afraid of being sexually assaulted. In fact, 34% of women in the U.S. say they worry about being sexually assaulted, and of the women under 50 years old, 42%  say they worry occasionally about it. The worry of being sexually assaulted by women has been rising in the past couple of years, but it is not at it's highest yet. In 2003 39% of women worried about being sexually assaulted. Worries may be rising due to the fact that sexual assault it taking place all over the U.S..

The next reason something needs to be done about sexual assault is that it is happening all around the U.S.. Sexual assault is now also taking place in the military. 81%  of people think that sexual assault within the military is very important, but 11% say it is more of a problem inside the military; 23% say it's a bigger problem outside of the military, and 63% say it's about the same. Do we really want our soldiers worrying about being sexually assaulted? Sexual assault is also taking place on college campuses. 1 in 5 (20%) women will be sexually assaulted while attending college, but of that 20% it's estimated that only 5% of sexual assaults on campus are reported. This makes sexual assault the most unreported crime. Although most people think that nothing happens after the assault, there is more that comes after wards.

The last reason that sexual assault needs to be stopped is because there is an after math for the victim. Not only does rape result in about 32,000 prenancies each year, 40% of the rape survivors develop a sexually transmitted disease. Rape survivors are also 13 times more likely to commit suicide than people who have not been raped. To add on to the list 4 out of 5 rape victims subsequently suffer from chronic physical of psychological conditions.

Sexual assault has, and still is a problem in this country. In the future I would hope that we wouldn't even need to worry about being assaulted of raped. Let's bring the victims and everyone else in America some closure by solving this problem.
