Immigration

This letter will inform you about the loophole of birthright citizenship.

Dear Future President,

Have you ever sat on your porch and looked into the sunset? While you did this have you ever thought about how fortunate you are to live in this country? Patriotism and living the “American Dream” is about you and your neighbor, as well as all of your other fellow countrymen and women. This makes me passionate about the topic of immigration because you shouldn’t be here just to feed off the riches of our great nation but to build on it and make it so your children and grandchildren may also live the dream you are living.

The United States Department of Homeland Security has estimated that 11.4 million illegal immigrants lived in the United States in 2012. The Department of Homeland Security reports that the number of illegal immigrants is going down but the number is still well over 10 million.

In our great country, we have a Constitution that is the longest standing form of government in the world. Some illegal immigrants have found a loophole in the 14th Amendment with birthright citizenship. Birthright citizenship gives anyone who is born in the U.S. all of the constitutional rights even if their parents aren’t legal. So, a female from Latin America could cross the southern border of the States and have her baby here and that baby would be a citizen. The mother wouldn’t be deported because she would have to care for her child who is a “citizen”. That is cheating the system, and that lady is in the country for the wrong reasons.

This could be solved by not granting citizenship to the kids of those who aren’t legal or those who aren’t in the process of becoming a citizen. The process of becoming a U.S. citizen takes on average of around six months. If you love this country and want to contribute to it, then you shouldn’t have a problem with the legalization process. Also, if you loved the country, you wouldn’t want to be LEGAL and not break the LAW. Please listen to my plea for myself and everyone else who cares deeply about the red white and blue are counting on you.

Sincerely,

Trey K.
