Food Waste

Food waste is a serious problem around the world with a very easy solution.

Dear President,

Food waste around the world needs to stop. This is a serious problem that could be very simply prevented. Our society does’t think about wasting food, but we need to. We could be saving lives with what we throw away. There are 795 million people that are in need of food. That comes out to one in nine people on earth are starving, which, if you think about, is a scary number. For, instance, if my classroom were the world about three kids would be starving. It may not seem like a lot but that adds up quickly. This is something that could easily be stopped. The only cause of this is wasteful people. Our society needs to think about others before they just throw their food away. Throwing away food has become a habit to us, a very bad one that needs to broken. For instance what about the people who struggle to pay bills? I’m sure they wouldn’t mind the food you were throwing away because it didn’t taste good. Taste would not bother these people, they would choke anything down to be able to live.

This is a major problem! I’m sure that no one agrees with food waste, yet it still happens on a regular basis. People who are starving begin to get angry and cannot hold their jobs. The kids who are starving are not able to focus in school. This makes everyday living very complicated for these people. People would put the argument up that some of these people put themselves in this situation by their past or because they do not put in an effort in life. I agree with this sometimes, but they don’t deserve to die because of mistakes they made. Even if they don’t try, it’s really not that hard to save food. We need to be less selfish and more selfless in the world and especially our country.

This wouldn’t be such a huge deal if everyone had enough food to live healthily, but that isn’t the case. About one third of food produced in the world is wasted, which is an outrageous number. We need to cut this number and make it so at most 5% of food produced is wasted. We waste enough food to feed each one of the starving; 3270 pounds of food, which is outrageous for the simple fact that that’s 1300 pounds over what the average person eats a year. This tells us we produce more than is needed for every person on earth, which is quite stupid if you ask me. I understand there will always be some waste, but this is way too much plus way too much food produced in general.

The cause of food waste is embarrassing. Everyone that eats and produces food creates this waste. There is no reason for the human race to do this. It is simply carelessness. I understand a little bit of waste just because you’re going to forget and food rots or gets bad sometimes without trying. All the other waste from the wasteful people needs to stop.

The solution to this problem is very simple as well. We need to start eating our leftovers! If you happen to have extra food or don’t like something you have that is non-perishable, donate it. Another thing is that we need to take only what we are going to eat. If we see people wasting food we need to confront them and make them finish it or save it for another day. If they do not like it remind them not to get it the next time, and to try a little bit before you take a lot.

Sincerely,

Gavin D.
