American´s Health Care

Our health care system is corrupt in many ways, here´s why...

Dear Future President,

I am very concerned about one important issue, and that is health care. Annually, our country spends a total of $2.8 trillion on health care, this is a large sum of money which is mostly, because of overpriced doctor visits and medicine.

Going to the doctor is very crucial for your health, I understand that, but paying very high prices for medication that might not even work is ridiculous. Most of the time doctors don't know if treatment is needed or if that certain medication works on the patient. This means we could be spending unnecessary amounts of money to treatments that has a fifty-fifty chance of helping you. If medicine was cheap these days this whole thing wouldn't be a problem. Alas medicine is very expensive. For example a Nexium prescription ( a heartburn medicine) cost $215 in the U.S. and in the Netherlands the same medication is $23. This is an insane gap, you pay $200 less in the Netherlands. We shouldn't have this much of a gap. This shows expensive medicine is in America.

Another subject of interest is all the scans Americans do. For example a heart attack is treated with so many scans and tests, so it drives up the cost, and some of these scans are unnecessary, most doctors do it for money. The most insane fact is that insurance plans charge different prices for the same surgeries and scans. THis is mind blowing, you can be paying more money than on people on the same treatment, I believe it should be the same price to be fair. Someone could be paying a large sum to their insurance plan and pay even more for the same medicine that someone (not paying the same amount to their insurance) else pays less for the same exact medicine. This is not only wrong but unfair, as the next president you should make everything fair to everyone. For example my mom works very hard and long hours just to get the same amount of money if she didn't work long hours. I find this not right a thing for you to change.

Our healthcare system is built for profit and not health. Americans overall spend 765 billion dollars annually on things that don't make us any healthier. These are wasted procedures, not only that but you are bank robbing Americans. 50% of what happens in medicine is waste, this is half of the medication which is supposed to make us healthier. The worst thing is that doctors get paid depending on if they performed that treatment not on how well they did it. I think this is very wrong, doctors should get paid on if the patient is healthy and fine after the treatment. So basically doctors don´t have to worry about your health. This should not be. As a result of not caring there has been medical error deaths of 210,000 to 440,000 patients. This is because of doctors lacking the drive to do well, it's because no matter what a large sum of money will be there. The money overshadows the patient's health. Although not all doctors are like that there are some that are.

There are many flaws in the healthcare system that need to be fixed not only for our health but for our economy as well. We need our future generation to be healthy so we need a system that CAN actually do that.
