Dear Future President:
My name is Andrew Whelan and I am a student at West Milford High School. I think there’s a big issue with texting and driving right now. People are not taking it seriously when they hear about all of the accidents that happen and how many people are killed from texting and driving. Everyone needs to the think about what texting and driving can ruin your life and other people’s lives too.
At least 3,000 people die everyday from texting and driving, there are at least one million crashes every year from texting and driving. The ages that most people are dying in these accidents are about 18-25. There are 10 states that prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones, there are 32 states that prohibit drivers from cell phone use. I found that information on www.textinganddrivingsafety.com. I think all states should make texting and driving illegal due to the amount of deaths it has caused.
The main cause of texting and driving is people don’t think when they hear their phone ding. Their first instinct is to grab the phone and answer while driving and everyone probably thinks to themselves what’s the worst that could if they answer a text quickly. I think why the ages are 18-25 is because those are the ages where you first start driving and you are very active on your phone with friends and social media. You would think when you first get your license you would be very careful not to look at your phone while driving, but texting and driving has been one of the main causes of death for a couple years. All everyone that drives has to do is leave their ringer off and flip your phone over or just turn your phone off completely.
There are a lot of different effects of texting and driving. One of the main effects texting and driving has on people are a lot of car crashes. The people that get affected are the people involved in the crash and their families. A lot of these car crashes might involve someone dying too. After everyone sees the commercials and the news reports on the deaths from texting and driving they still don’t get the message. There’s really only one effect in the end and that’s either injury or death for the person texting and driving or the other person in the other car.
There are also a lot of different perspectives and views people have on texting and driving. Some people think texting and driving should be made illegal because it would save a lot of lives. “A teenager in Anchorage,Alaska ran through a red light while texting and driving, he ended up killing a 27 year old woman and a mother of two children.” I got this story from www.shanestafford.com/top10worsttextinganddrivingaccidents.You would think if someone heard that in the news and they were guilty of texting and driving in the past they would stop completely but people don’t get the message. I think as the next president you could help a lot and maybe start a new campaign against texting and driving. As the new president I think people will listen to what you have say and people might finally get the message to not text and drive.
In conclusion, I hope as the new president you can help me try to completely stop texting and driving. Due to the amount of accidents and deaths I think should people think before they pick up their phone. What I hope you will do as the next president of the United States is start a campaign to stop texting and driving. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Andrew Whelan
