Dear Future President, 

Slavery was outlawed more than a century ago, however, 45.8 million people are enslaved today in every country in the world. Victims of slavery can be as young as five or six years old. Nearly 1 in 3 of the detected victims of slavery is a child. and over half are women and girls. What is Modern Slavery? "Modern slavery is when one person possesses or controls another person in such a way as to significantly deprive that person of their individual liberty, with the intention of exploiting that person through their use, profit, transfer or disposal" (Walkfree). It is frightening that this practice continues world wide. The victims are usually isolated from everyone and everything they know, unsure if they will ever escape the cruel treatment of their captures. This is unacceptable! Some of the forms of slavery still existing today include: forced labor, bonded labor, human trafficking, descent - based slavery, child slavery, slavery in supply chains, forced and early marriage, and prostitution. Women are forced into prostitution, children and adults are forced to work in agriculture, to do domestic work, or to work in factories and sweat shops producing goods sold world wide (Antislavery). 

The exploitation of young girls and women for sex trafficking is extremely terrifying.  The victims are often tricked into believing a job is waiting for them, or they are sold under desperate circumstances. Instead, they may be beaten, deprived of food or sleep, held captive, threatened, drugged, raped or physically tortured. These victims are also exposed to sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and unwanted pregnancies. Beyond the physical abuse women suffer extreme emotional stress, shame, grief, fear, distrust, and suicidal thoughts. They often turn to drugs and alcohol to numb their pain (Soroptimist). 

Please stop this horrible act! We need to raise awareness to this senseless practice, and help those victims who are fortunate enough to escape this abusive destructive cycle of exploitation. Help is need to give these victims an education, economic tools and skills to achieve independence and to live productive lives. I am begging you to help stop human trafficking and modern slavery today.
