More Laws on Guns to Decrease Gun Violence
This letter is about getting more laws on guns, so the gun violence decreases.
Dear Next President,
I believe that there should be more laws on guns to decrease gun violence and crime. If people illegally have possession of guns it is more likely that there will be crime and violence, because we are unaware of the people that have the guns and we don’t know what these people are capable of. There should be more advanced background checks, so we are aware of what the person’s mental state is and if they have committed any violent acts in the past. We need to be sure that all gun owners have good intentions. Instead of categorising all of the good and bad gun owners, we should be putting all guns into the bad category.
If guns weren’t in hands of people who didn’t have a gun license the crime rate would decrease. That would happen because everyone who has a gun legally would’ve gone through a proper background check and would have a license. By doing this it is preventing people who sell guns, to sell guns to people who are mentally ill or have bad and threatening intentions.
In the article “It’s Time to Ban Guns. Yes, All of Them” Phoebe Maltz Bovy claims that “Ban guns but not in a discriminatory way. Banning guns is not about dividing society into “good” and “bad” gun owners. It’s about placing gun ownership itself into the “bad” category.” This is important because instead of us categorizing guns, saying that some are good and some are bad we should just be saying that all guns are bad. In the article “It’s Time to Ban Guns. Yes, All of Them” Phoebe also mentioned this “Ban guns! Not just gun violence. Not just certain guns. Not just already-technically-illegal guns. All of them.” This is another important claim because if we just ban gun violence, it won’t get rid of the real problem which is guns altogether.
I believe that it should be a law to have advanced background checks. I also believe that we need to be more aware of who owns guns, and make sure that everyone who is purchasing a gun has had a proper background check and has a license. Instead of always categorize the people we need to just categorize the guns.
Sincerely, Alivia
