School Uniforms
Why are school uniforms are important in schools?
Dear President-elect Trump,
My name is Lilyana, and I would like to discuss the topic on the debate whether students should wear school uniforms or not. I currently attend a catholic school, which requires me to wear a school uniform. In my opinion, school uniforms are not a problem to me because on some occasions, there are dress down days where I get to wear casual clothing. However, some students disagree with my opinion. Having said that, I would like to provide facts regarding this topic and my opinion.
School uniforms keep students focused on their education, not their clothes. Having school uniforms lifts the stress off of students’ shoulders that we do not have to look through all of the many clothing we have for each school day. School uniforms also decreases the annual costs that parents have to pay every year for their child. The average parent goes through about $671 dollars a year for their child to have enough clothing throughout the school year. Knowing that $671 dollars is a lot of money for only one kid, think about a parent with about three kids or more! That would be a lot of money wasted just so their child “looks good” at school. If students were to just wear the same school uniform each day, it would be saving parents a lot of money that can be used elsewhere. Students wearing the same school uniforms also limits bullying. If children wore different clothing than most of the other children, it would give bullies a reason to bully them. Now, if students wore the same clothing every day, there would be less bullying about other people’s clothing. School uniforms create a level playing field among students, reducing peer pressure.
Wearing uniforms enhances school pride, unity, and community. What I mean by this statement is that when students go out, for example a supermarket after school, their uniforms show their school’s logo. They show others what school they come from, and it shows their school pride and spirit. These school uniforms creates unity throughout the school, instead of diversities in every class. When a whole school is in uniform, it seems to have a stronger meaning on what unity is all about. School uniforms make getting ready for school easier, which can improve punctuality. If all student had uniforms and knew exactly what they were going to wear the next day, they would be attending school on time. I believe that all schools should have school uniforms or make a stricter dress code. I hope, Mr. Trump, you at least consider my thoughts and opinion and make the right decision.
Sincerely,
Lilyana R.
