Driving Laws for Minors

The laws for minors like not being able to drive with somebody under 20 without somebody who is licensed and is 25 years or older needs to be brought down a notch.

Dear Mr. President Barack Obama,

I am a senior at San Marcos High School in San Marcos, California. I will be graduating with the Class of 2017 and after high school I want to become a police officer. Today I want to talk to you about the special driving laws for minors, like RSTR 47. RSTR 47 does not let a minor drive with somebody who is under 20 years old unless there is somebody who is 25 years or older present, and is also licensed. RSTR 47 also does not allow a minor to drive alone in between the hours of 11pm and 5am. These laws are just dumb in my opinion. The fact that we had to do in class / online drivers ed and go through 6 hours of behind the wheel training just to get our license makes it dumb. We had a lot of practice before we started driving just so that our driving privileges could be restricted? I think we (minors) should be able to drive with people who are under 20, especially because a lot of have younger siblings who need rides to school. Our parents are working and the brothers and sisters are to young to walk alone to school so who is going to take them? We need to be able to drive with people under 20. Not being able to drive in between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am isn't too much of a big deal because we shouldn't be out that late, I get that. I know that these laws are to protect us and the people around us but in my opinion we had enough training to drive with another minor in the car. This needs to change.

Sincerely,

Juan Bautista
