Starvation in the World

While the United States is one of the richest countries in the world not much of our money has gone to feeding the poorer countries around us and that needs to change.

October 19, 2016

Dear Future President,

Food is something we need to survive. Imagine sitting down ready to eat after you have been hungry for an hour or two. It happens to Americans every now and then. Now make that feeling worse and worse and worse. So much worse that you can see all of your bones sticking out of your body. Starvation has been a problem for millions of years. While the United States is one of the richest countries in the world not much of our money has gone to feeding the poorer countries around us and that needs to change.

Around the world many people don’t have access to enough food. Most of those people are in developing countries in fact in the article “The Five Worst Spots For Hunger” 98% of hungry people are in developing countries such as Sub Saharan Africa, Caribbean, and Southeastern Asia. But it’s not just other countries. In 2011 14.9% of American households were food insecure. In 1955 was the mark when one million people around the world have died from starvation. In 1965 five million people died from hunger in America. In 1970 the world started to realize what was happening and recognized hunger as a major problem.

Not having the correct amount of food can have many side effects. In the article “Nutrition and Growth ; Facts for life” the author states more than one third of all child deaths around the world are attributed to malnutrition, specifically under nutrition, which weakens the body’s resistance to illness.” This means the body becomes too weak to fight off illness and gets sick and dies. In the article “Hunger in America: 2016 United States hunger and Poverty facts” the author states that an estimated 146 million children in developing countries are underweight.

There are many things America can do to help get food to the people who need it. First a non profit organization would be created that donates food to developing countries. The food would come from the massive food waste in America. Which is equal to an astonishing $310 billion dollars in developing countries. More local food banks would be built around the country so citizens could donate food for the donations.

The feeling of having been hungry for days and not having anything to eat will never leave this world completely. People will always die from sickness and starvation because there is no such thing as a perfect world. But there is always something humans can improve on and right now there has been a problem going on around the world for too long and it is time to make a change. There should no longer be anyone around the world hungry because we all have the right to food. Lets let the world never be hungry again!

Sincerely,

Anastasia R
