Immigration

My feeling on your immigration policy

Dear Mr Trump,

It was November 9 after a long week of anger and hate that that my sister had a very interesting experience . Her lifelong best friend had become bitter and depressed almost instantly. Later we learned that her family, who are Hispanic, became bitter and angry due to comments made during your campaign about building a wall between the US and Mexico . Although I feel our country needs an overall immigration policy change, I disagree with the approach of actually building a wall and deporting Mexicans. From what I’ve seen I feel that there is room for everyone to be happy and maintain a strong relation with our neighbors on the southern border.

First, I feel that there is no need to build a wall across our southern border. According to Washington Post fact checker the overall cost of the wall would be $25 billion which is something that we can’t afford due to the aftermath of the Great Recession. Building this wall would also hurt us economically even if we were able to to get Mexico to pay for the wall . The Immigration Impact tells us that , “ Likewise with his related plan to clear the United States of all undocumented immigrants, which would subtract millions of workers and consumers from the U.S. economy. If we try to make the United States a Mexico-free zone, we will tear the country apart in the process, ” Finally I would like to state that many family’s lives would be affected by this decision. Pewresearch.org shows that there are over 11.4 million immiagrents in the United States, but more importantly they come to the United States because for immiagrents it is a beacon of hope.

Although there are some flaws in your plans I feel that there is some truth to your ideas.

Taxpayers are paying for illegal immigrants and yet don’t pay the same amount of taxes back. According to the Amac, “There are over 80 of these programs which, at a cost of nearly $900 billion per year provide cash, food, housing, medical, and other services” therefore you are right that there needs to be change because the everyday person should be able to use their money. That being said these people look up to america as a place get away from the problems of the country's that they came from.

That is why I have come up with a solution that will fit everyone’s needs. I feel that the United States should offer a work permit which will accept individual immigrants over the age of 18 so they can live in the United States and be treated like a citizen. They will have limitations on what they can or can’t do. In order balance the economy they can only buy certain housing and items that will fit into their budget unless they get a higher paying job. If they want to have any higher paying jobs or have other family members come into the country, they will have to become a citizen. Therefore why should we destroy are relationship with Mexico when we have the chance to make it better?

Overall your ideas are not wrong but there are better ways of dealing with illegal immigration. If we work together maybe we will have the chance of getting us out of the Great Recession.

All sophomore students at Metea Valley High School wrote letters to President-Elect Trump, voicing their issues on ideas that are important to them. These letters were part of a three-week project, where we learned about rhetorical situation; types of claims; types of evidence; and embedding quotes.
