Black Lives Matter

Police take advantage of their power.

Dear future president,

A problem that has been occurring more often in the U.S is police brutality. Police officers have been shooting innocent people just because they “thought” they were armed or they “thought” they were harming their community. Each innocent life a police officer takes away will not be forgotten or put to rest. “Police shoot first and ask questions later.“

Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, started a national anthem protest due to police brutality. Kaepernick stated, “"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." Many athletes from different sports have followed him by taking a knee or speaking about it.

Many of the deaths were mostly people of color. For instance, Trayvon Martin was an 17 year old, African American and was mistakenly shot dead for suspicious behavior coming back from a liquor store which he had bought candy and a canned drink from. His death has started the hashtag #Blacklivesmatter. In my research it says that police have killed more than 100 unarmed black people in 2015. Most of these deaths were caused by officers assuming that they were either armed, on something, or acting suspicious. I don’t think police should have their guns out if they’re assuming anything. The police officers are supposed to use guns for protection and emergencies, not just because they're scared or unsure.

Since you are going to be the next president, you should take what your people have to say into consideration. So what’s your move future president?

Sincerely,

Sophie
